Who are these programmes designed for?
Our English language courses are open to adult students from all over the world who have a need and interest in developing their general language skills in English, regardless of their level of English. They are for students who fully appreciate that learning English in an English speaking country is without doubt the fastest and most effective way to learn, as they will be fully committed to the language learning process.

Preparation for IELTS at MLS is available at three levels:

Pre-Intermediate level (CEFR A2) – an introduction to IELTS with exam-type practice to help you approach the four IELTS papers: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Intermediate level (CEFR B1) – exam preparation and practice at intermediate level.
Upper-Intermediate level and above (CEFR B2+) – exam preparation and practice to help you achieve higher IELTS scores.

MLS is a long-established and officially recognised examination preparation centre and we can enrol you for the IELTS examination at a convenient IELTS examination centre.

The MLS Library also has a good range of exam preparation and practice material that will help you prepare for your exam. There is always an experienced teacher available to advise and help you, and you can use our self-study rooms for guided exam practice.

Course Structure:
The MLS General English syllabus is organised in timetabled classes in different Elements.

All students are tested when they arrive at MLS, and are then placed in classes at their language level. Students on the IELTS 20 course will study two of the following Elements:

Element 1 – integrated language systems and skills development with a focus on level specific grammar and vocabulary (optional Element).
Element 2 – a reading and writing skills development session with focus on written English (optional Element).
Element 4 – examination focused training, delivering specific language preparation for the IELTS exam (required Element).

International Business Communications

* Who are these programmes designed for?

The course is suitable for experienced business professionals, those who are just starting out in their careers and students of business.

The English for International Business Communications course is designed to equip you with the language and skills you need in order to be successful in any work place. Throughout the course, you will continue improve your English language ability through the context of Business English. You will also learn key skills that are needed in any business environment, such as how to negotiate and how to give presentations.

* What Business English training will you receive at MLS?

Listening Comprehension:
You will be introduced to a range of accents and speeds of speaking within an international business environment. Listening practice will be delivered through a range of authentic situations such as listening in meetings and taking minutes, listening for key information in presentations and on the telephone and listening for detail in conferences.

Speaking:
The aim of these lessons is to increase your confidence and fluency through guided work, discussion, role-play and group or individual presentations. Attention is paid to clear production of connected speech as well as of individual sounds. You will gain speaking practice through authentic business tasks such as giving presentations, participating in meetings and using social English for networking.

Reading:
You will learn specific reading skills such as skimming, scanning and dealing with unknown vocabulary. These skills will help you to understand authentic business documents such as reports and proposals. You will also gain reading practice by looking at up to date case studies and articles from various business publications and newspapers.

Writing:
You will be given training in writing for a number of purposes and will learn the necessary grammar, structure and vocabulary you need in order to produce successful business documents.

The following International Business Communications courses are available:

English Language Examinations

MLS is able to offer different kinds of English Language Examination courses to suit your individual needs. There are many examinations available, so it is important that you find the right exam for you.

MLS can offer you an Examination counseling service to help you decide which exam is right for your level and which qualification will be the most useful. Our experienced Examination Officer will meet with you on a one to one basis and help you make the right decisions. She will also guide you through the whole application process.

University Pathway Programmes

Quality, recognised Foundation routes to Undergraduate and Postgraduate Study in the UK. MLS offers pathway courses leading to UK University degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate (Masters) level. MLS has built strong relationships with many UK universities over the years and our students have been offered places at nearly 100 different institutions since 1991.

Programmes are delivered by a blend of subject specialism and British Council accredited language teaching to provide a strong preparation for University study. A full list of programmes is provided below :

* Undergraduate Foundation Programme

The one-year full time MLS University Foundation Diploma Programme is designed to meet the needs of International students whose existing qualifications are considered insufficient for their direct entry onto the first year of an undergraduate programme. It forms a foundation year for a first-degree programme at a British University. It is an NQF level 3 equivalent programme.

Working in collaboration with its university partners MLS has successfully provided Undergraduate Access programmes since 1987. It has an excellent track record in this area, with the vast majority of students who apply receiving offers from British Universities and many going on to complete first-degree honours programmes. The standard MLS Undergraduate Foundation Programme currently operates with a modular structure and is offered over two pathways.

* Pre-Masters Programme

The one-year full time MLS University Pre-Masters Diploma (Postgraduate pathway) Programme in Management and English Studies is designed to meet the needs of mature International students. It provides an opportunity for those who have a first degree, diploma or business experience wishing to consolidate and update their skills in order to become more effective in the workforce. The programme is specifically intended to facilitate progression onto a post graduate business related course at a British University. It is an NQF level 6 programme.

Working in collaboration with its university partners MLS has successfully provided Pre-Masters programmes since 1987. It has an excellent track record in this area, with the vast majority of students who apply receiving offers from British Universities and many going on to complete Masters programmes. The standard MLS Pre-Masters Programme currently operates with a modular structure and is outlined in the learning programme map shown below.

* English + IELTS

The following IELTS preparation courses are available:

English and IELTS 30: 1 lesson band of IELTS preparation plus 2 lesson bands of General English per day
English and IELTS 20: 1 lesson band of IELTS preparation plus 1 lesson band of General English per day

* Higher National Diploma (Business Studies) (Final Year entry route)

The MLS HND is designed for students who wish to commence their University studies but who require additional language support to guide them through their first year or two of study. Typically Universities require international students to have a minimum of 6.0 IELTS to obtain admission. At MLS, students can commence their HND at only 5.0 IELTS, as they will receive ongoing and integrated language support throughout their course.

What qualifications does this programme provide?
The MLS HND is offered with the UK QCA registered organization EDEXCEL. The programme will provide students with a foundation degree equivalent level of study and successful students will be awarded with a recognised Higher National Diploma.

On successful completion of this programme students will be eligible to apply for direct entry onto a “Top up degree” (final year entry) at one of our partner Universities. On completion of the top up degree the student will be awarded with a full Bachelor’s degree.
