English for Communicative Purposes (EC)

All full-time students take the same morning classes, designed to improve communication skills that are important in professional, daily and academic life. Using a well-respected textbook and authentic material, students study listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, speaking, and pronunciation.

The afternoon classes in the ECP program focus on helping students achieve fluency in communication. Group work and projects give students further opportunities for intensive and interactive practice of the skills they learn in the morning and expand on how people actually use the English language.

Students receive 25 hours of classroom instruction, 5 hours of social activities and 2 hours of guided self-study each week.

University College Pathway (UCP)

The purpose of the courses in the UCP program is to prepare international students for future university and college studies by guiding them to develop the English language skills necessary for their academic success. The different levels of the program simultaneously combine English language study with academic preparation, gradually giving students the educational training, language skills, critical thinking abilities, and time management skills that they need to achieve their goals. When the students graduate from our final UCP level, they will be able to perform successfully at post-secondary institutions in Canada or in other English-speaking countries. Students who graduate from this program also have direct access to numerous degree, diploma, and certificate programs at our many partner universities and colleges in Canada and the United States.

Duration:
Each level in the UCP program lasts for 12 weeks, and classes are Monday to Thursday from 1:00pm to 3:30pm (with a 10-minute break from 2:10 to 2:20). The length of time a student spends in the UCP program will depend on their English level when they begin their studies.

Please note that full-time students also study in our General Skills program in the mornings. Skills classes are Monday to Friday from 8:45am to 12:00pm.

While ECSL allows students to enrol in classes at any time, it is important to note that we strongly advise potential students to commence their studies at the beginning of one of our terms—Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall—in order to not miss any important materials or skills.

The levels in UCP focus on increasing students’ overall abilities in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in an academic context. Within these skill areas, the students focus on specific areas such as academic writing and referencing; listening to lectures and taking notes; reading and annotating; editing and proofreading; delivering presentations, speeches, and debates; doing effective research; avoiding plagiarism; and building academic vocabulary. The objectives are level-dependent. Each of the levels in our UCP program is mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

All courses in the program have subsidiary aims of building interpersonal skills, increasing cross-cultural awareness, and improving critical thinking skills. The students rely heavily on problem-solving and teamwork in order to successfully meet the requirements of the program and each of its courses.

Business English for the Workplace

The purpose of thin program is to prepare students to succeed in the world of business by assisting them in developing their English-language skills. Students focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening within the context of the business world, though the course focuses mostly on communication skills. Students study in IBE as an afternoon elective.

The full course lasts for six months (two terms). No material is repeated in that time frame. Students can also elect to study for three months (one term). We recommend that our students stay in the program for the duration of their courses. However, students are welcome to enter and exit the IBE program according to their needs. Our start and end dates are flexible. Students take IBE courses in combination with our other morning programs on offer, such as our core Skills classes or our IELTS course. The IBE class is from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm (with a 10-minute break).

Course Requirements:
The students who study in the IBE program must be at a minimum level of ECSL’s Skills 300 course, which is an intermediate course, when they commence studying in IBE. They must be at a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) benchmark of B1 to study in the IBE course, which is approximately a 5.0 IELTS band score.

Description:
In IBE, there is a strong focus on building accuracy and fluency through building the students’ lexical resource of vocabulary, expressions, idioms, and collocations. Also, the students learn many structures that they will use in their spoken and written production. In short, the students will gain the language skills they need to be able to participate successfully in any situation.

The course is a practical application of concepts and current business practices. The class is based on communicative activities. The students work collaboratively on various projects, assignments, and role plays; this gives them teamwork skills that are crucial in the business world.

IELTS Programs

East Coast School of Languages is an official IELTS Test Centre. Study IELTS Preparation and sit your IELTS exam with us in Halifax.

Purpose: The purpose of the IELTS Preparation (IP) program is to enable students to acquire the skills they need to succeed on the IELTS proficiency test.

Course Requirements: The students who study in the IELTS course must be at a minimum level of ECSL’s Skills 300 course, which is an intermediate course, when they commence studying in IELTS. They must be at a Common European Framework of Reference (CERF) benchmark of B1 to study in IELTS, which is equivalent to an IELTS band score of approximately 5.0.

Students who take IELTS, which is an afternoon class, study in our General Skills program in the morning.
