This course is for students who need to improve their all-round English skills.
KEY INFORMATION
ㆍCourse length - 2-50 weeks
ㆍStart dates - every Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is a public holiday)
ㆍProgramme - Full-time 23 + 2* hours per week / Part-time 15 hours per week
ㆍLevels available - beginner to advanced (6 levels)
* This course includes 2 hours of optional supervised self-study
COURSE OUTLINE
The General English course helps students to communicate effectively and includes:
ㆍSpeaking, listening, reading and writing lessons
ㆍVocabulary development
ㆍDiscussions of news and current affairs
ㆍNew Zealand culture and customs
ㆍUse of published textbooks and materials
ㆍComputer room and language laboratory learning sessions
ㆍAn independent learning programme
ㆍSkills for lifelong learning
The full-time course also includes the following afternoon optional classes:
ㆍCommunication skills classes for extra speaking and listening practice
ㆍStudy skills classes for extra reading and writing practice
PLACEMENT AND ASSESSMENT
Students are given a placement test on the first day of the course and placed in a class with other students at the same level. Assessment is continuous throughout the course. CCEL students are tested every 6 weeks and receive individual progress reports.

English for Academic Purposes
CCEL's English for Academic Purposes - Pathway to UC (EAP) courses are for students who want to:
ㆍimprove their academic English skills for tertiary study in an English speaking country
ㆍgain direct entry (without IELTS) into CCEL's partner institution, the University of Canterbury (UC)*
* Students who successfully complete an EAP course at CCEL (and meet the UC's academic entry requirements) can transfer to the UC's Foundation Studies programme or one of their undergraduate degree or postgraduate degree programmes without taking IELTS. EAP1 Pathway - UC Foundation Studies or EAP2
EAP2 Pathway - UC undergraduate or postgraduate degree programmes
ㆍCourse length - 12 weeks for both EAP1 and EAP2
ㆍStart dates - 5 start dates per year for EAP1 and 3 start dates per year for EAP2. Please check our start dates here.
ㆍProgramme - Full-time. 20 hours per week in class + 5 hours of self-study and 5 hours of online study per week

EAP1 and EAP2 teach academic English skills needed for tertiary study. They include development and practice of:

PLACEMENT AND ASSESSMENT
Minimum entry levels apply. Placement in an English for Academic Purposes - Pathway to UC class will depend on level assessment. Entry requirements are given in the chart below. The CCEL level assessment can be taken overseas before arriving in New Zealand. Course assessment is continuous throughout EAP1 and EAP2. Successful completion of EAP1 leads directly to study at the University of Canterbury at foundation studies level or to EAP2 at CCEL. Successful completion of EAP2 leads directly to study at the University of Canterbury at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Cambridge Exam Preparation
CCEL is proud to announce that it is Christchurch's newest Cambridge-ESOL exam centre.
Students can gain internationally recognised qualifications by taking Cambridge Examination courses at CCEL. Cambridge certificates can help students find jobs which require English skills. Students can sit the Cambridge Exams in the CCEL Christchurch school.

CLASS BLOG
The Business English class sometimes uses a blog. It includes information about class topics, interesting business articles, useful video clips, and a weekly review of their study.

TESOL TKT Course
TESOL TKT Course
The TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) is a qualification from Cambridge ESOL. It is for people who want to teach English and develop the knowledge they need to become English teachers. It is also ideal for non-native English speakers who are already teaching English, and who would like to improve their knowledge. There is also the TKT Practical for people who want a certificate for their teaching skills.
CCEL Christchurch's TESOL/CambridgeTKT course gives you the opportunity to develop your teaching knowledge and to practise teaching skills. You receive a CCEL TESOL certificate and report. You also take the TKT test, and the TKT Practical as well, both of which you receive an internationally-recognised certificate for.
