While the communicative approach is central we always consider the individual learning style of our students. All four language skills are given the appropriate class time through the application of our academic syllabus. • Aviation English- ICAO
AEP Aviation English Programme - ICAO

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has mandated new aviation standards of English proficiency for flight crew members and air traffic controllers starting March 5, 2008.

CEC offers flexible training courses in Aviation English. General-language development in English for Aviation is conducted in small international classes at appropriate language levels, while the specialised training elements are conducted in closed groups that focus on particular specialisations.

Because ICAO has now decreed that the English-language proficiency standard for aircraft operators must be standardised, CEC offers flexibly structured training courses for pilots, air traffic controllers and other aviation professionals adapted to meet the requirements of the ICAO published guidelines. Courses are designed for small groups of trainees to meet the precise requirements of individual sponsors. The structure and content of study programmes will vary depending on the respective training objectives and the language entry level of participants:

    - Course Includes: ICAO Aviation English Operational Level 4

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has decreed that English-language proficiency of pilots and air traffic controllers must be standardised. Accordingly, as of 5 March 2008 Contracting States will be obligated to take steps to ensure that all licensed air traffic control personnel and flight crews involved in flight operations in airspace where the use of the English language is required are proficient in conducting and comprehending radiotelephony and general aviation communications in English.
The objective of the ICAO language-proficiency requirements is to ensure that flight crews and air traffic controllers have sufficient language proficiency in whatever language they use for radiotelephony communications to manage all of the potential communicative needs related to pilot and controller communications. These range from routine phraseologies and communications not encompassed by phraseologies, to non-routine situations and outright emergencies. It is known that pilots and controllers can memorize phraseologies, and phraseologies alone are often insufficient for the task. The ICAO language test for aviation communications therefore extends well beyond simply testing an individual's knowledge of phraseologies.
ICAO Holistic Descriptors. In developing the following Holistic Descriptors ICAO has decreed that proficient speakers shall:

    communicate effectively in voice-only (telephone/radiotelephone) & in face-to-face situations
communicate on common, concrete & work-related topics with accuracy & clarity
use appropriate communicative strategies to exchange messages & to recognize & resolve misunderstandings in a general or work-related context
handle successfully & with relative ease the linguistic challenges presented by a complication or unexpected turn of events within the context of a routine work situation or communicative task with which they are otherwise familiar
use a dialect or accent that is intelligible to the aeronautical community
CEC training is structured and designed to meet the above and also to achieve the following ICAO requirements at the appropriate level specified.

    - Dates:

Sponsors should contact CEC with a Statement of Requirement, which must detail the number of course participants, their respective English-language skills' levels and the precise training objectives. CEC will then respond with a detailed, comprehensive and tailored Training Proposal.
  • Work Experience
    WE110 Work Experience Course

The use of English as the international means of communication continues to grow and most people study English at some stage in their career. For some, classroom learning is not enough; it is also essential to be fully confident in the use of English in the workplace. To meet this need, the Cork English College Work Experience Programme is specially designed to enable you to combine learning English in an excellent language school with practical work experience.

A Cork English College Work Experience Programme is useful if you want to:
Find a first or new job
    Change careers
Improve your skills in your current job
Complete a vocational course, which requires a work placement
Before the student arrives at Cork English College...

To enrol for a Work Experience Programme, we ask you to return the booking form to us, along with a deposit of €200 at least 4 weeks before the student's arrival in Cork. We must also receive a typed copy of student's Curriculum Vitae either with the Booking Form or as soon as possible afterwards.

On receipt of the Enrolment Form we send a Certificate of Enrolment (as an invoice) and one of the English Assessment Tests that all our students complete. Using all this information we reserve a place on an English Course at the correct level and make a provisional selection of suitable organisations for the Work Placement. Please note that we cannot guarantee a work placement with a particular organisation or in a particular area.

    - The English Course

The English Course in the Work Experience Programme must be full time (20 lessons per week or more) and last at least 4 weeks. The student can choose between a General Course (maybe with a special Business Option) of 4 to 50 week's duration, or a University of Cambridge Examination Course.

Good progress during the English Course is essential to the Programme. The student must reach a good Intermediate level and if this is not attained it may delay the start of the Work Placement.

There are two parts to a Work Experience Programme. The first is a full time (20 / 28 Lessons per week), English Course for a minimum of 4 weeks. The second is work placement with a company or organisation specially chosen to match, as closely as possible, your profession or subject of study. We offer work placements in a large number of workplaces covering a wide range of professions including:

    Agriculture
    Health & Social Services
    Politics
    Business Administration
    Hotel & Catering
    Retail
    Computing
    Import & Export
    Sales
    Economics
    Law
    Secretarial & PA
    Engineering & Technical
    Marketing & Advertising
    Tourism & Leisure
    Finance & Accounting
    Media & Communications
    Voluntary Organisations

When the student arrives in Cork...

On the first day at Cork English College, the student has an interview with the Course Director to check the level of English and make sure that the class we have reserved is the most beneficial for him.

During the first week of the course the student has an interview with one of our Work Placement counsellors to discuss in more detail his/her exact requirements. Then, after discussion with a number of prospective organisations, a final selection of workplace is made, carefully chosen to best meet the professional needs of the student.
We make every effort to match the student with an appropriate organisation and in nearly all cases we are successful. In any case where we just cannot make a good match we make a full refund of all the Work Placement Fees paid.

To help monitor progress teachers have frequent meetings with the Course Director and the student has regular tests so we can ensure that he is always in the best class and obtain maximum benefit from the course.

Towards the end of the language course the student is usually asked to attend an interview at the workplace that has been selected. This is a formal interview; it ensures that the student and the organisation are properly matched and that both parties will benefit from the placement.
